Blog posts competing with the homepage

Posts taking the same searches as the homepage, ranked by how many impressions they take, with a recommended fix for each. Measured on Search Console data rather than similar wording, so every row is competition that is actually happening. Brand searches are excluded — the homepage and a post both appearing for ayan capital is normal, not cannibalisation.

Two smaller sections follow. Dead URLs at the foot of the table: eight 404s from one repeated slug change, listed here because they are in the same sitemap and fixed in the same pass, but they need no decision from anyone — the replacement pages already exist. Indexation below it: the application subdomain, the blog category pages, and both robots.txt files.

Indexation: what should be in Google at all

Separate from the blog comparison above. These are whole groups of URLs competing for the brand's search results without earning their place — plus the two robots.txt files that should be governing them.

Do these in the right order, or they will not work

Disallow in robots.txt does not remove a page from Google. It stops Google crawling the URL — which means Google can no longer see the noindex tag on it, and the URL stays in the index indefinitely, usually shown as "Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt". Blocking a page you want removed is the one action guaranteed to keep it.

The order is always: 1. add noindex and leave the page crawlable → 2. wait for it to drop out of the index, typically two to six weeks, confirmed in the Pages report in Search Console → 3. only then add a Disallow, and only if you want to save crawl budget. For most of what follows, step 3 is optional and step 1 is the whole fix.

1. The application subdomain — app.ayan.co.uk

The subdomain stays — it runs the application journey. The change is that it stops competing in search: noindex it, then block it in robots.txt. Five URLs, 22,848 impressions, 1,027 clicks today.

No redirect is possible here, so nothing transfers. The 503 calculator clicks the app root earns are lost the moment it leaves the index, and the new page starts from zero. That makes the order below the whole fix — build first, noindex only once the replacement is ranking.

Build /car-finance-calculator on www

Primary term is car finance calculator. It shows 6,047 impressions for 22 clicks — the demand is already there and the ranking is too low to convert it. Halal is the secondary term and the differentiator, not the headline.

QueryImpressionsClicksRole

ayan finance calculator177154Brand

The brand calculator searches — 422 clicks between them, converting at up to 86% — will follow to whichever page ranks. With the app noindexed, that becomes this page, so they are recovered rather than lost.

Specification

URL /car-finance-calculator
Title Car Finance Calculator UK | Ayan
H1 Car finance calculator
Sub The Ayan car finance calculator works out your monthly payments on
        halal car finance.
Meta Use the Ayan car finance calculator to work out your monthly payments
on halal car finance, and see what your car costs across your term.

Lead the page on the generic job — working out a monthly payment — and let halal be the answer to why is there no APR further down. Leading with halal narrows it to the smaller term and forfeits the 6,000 impressions.

Three terms carry the page: car finance calculator, halal, and Ayan. Together they cover the generic demand, the qualifier that makes it relevant, and the brand searches that already convert at up to 86%. Halal rather than Shariah-compliant because that is the word people search with — every calculator query in the table uses it, none use Shariah. Ayan car finance calculator is itself a search, at 87 impressions and 68 clicks, so the phrase belongs in the copy verbatim.

Calculator above the fold, then the content that lets it rank: how the figure is calculated, why there is no interest, what Ijara wa Iqtina means for the payment, and a worked example. Add SoftwareApplication and FAQPage schema, link it from the homepage and main navigation, and point the calculator's submit at the application on the subdomain — the journey is unchanged, only the entry point moves.

Then retire the subdomain from search

1. Publish /car-finance-calculator and link it from the homepage and nav
2. Leave app.ayan.co.uk indexed while the new page establishes
3. Once it ranks for the calculator terms, add to every app response:
   X-Robots-Tag: noindex, follow
4. Remove the sitemap line from app.ayan.co.uk/robots.txt
5. Once Search Console shows the app URLs gone: Disallow: /

Steps 2 and 5 are the ones people skip. Noindexing the app before the new page ranks drops the calculator traffic into a gap with nothing to catch it — and with no redirect available, it does not come back on its own.

And Disallow must come after the deindex, never with it. Blocking stops Google crawling the URL, so it can no longer see the noindex, and the pages stay indexed as "Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt".

2. Blog category and sub-category pages

9 URLs, 9,949 impressions, 108 clicks — a 1.09% click-through rate. These are Webflow Collection list pages: no original copy, titles that repeat the brand name, and content that exists in full on the posts they link to. /blog-post-categories/vehicle-finance alone takes 8,774 impressions, almost entirely on brand searches where it competes with the homepage for the same result.

Two of them also carry query parameters — ?activeTab=personal and ?activeTab=all — which generate a separate indexable URL for the same content every time a tab is added.

Fix: noindex all category and sub-category templates, and let them keep passing links to the posts. In Webflow this is set per template rather than per page: Pages → Blog Categories template → SEO settings → uncheck "Index this page", which outputs:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow">

Add <link rel="canonical"> pointing at the parameter-free version so the ?activeTab= variants collapse into one URL. Then remove the category URLs from the sitemap — a sitemap should only ever list pages you want indexed, and listing a noindexed URL sends Google two contradictory instructions.

3. www.ayan.co.uk/robots.txt

The current file is a single line — no rules at all:

Sitemap: https://www.ayan.co.uk/sitemap.xml

That is not broken, and an empty robots.txt is safer than an over-eager one. But it does nothing about Webflow's internal URLs or the parameter variants above. Replace it with:

User-agent: *

# Webflow internals — no value in search
Disallow: /_next/
Disallow: /404
Disallow: /401
Disallow: /search
Disallow: /*?activeTab=
Disallow: /*?utm_

# Category pages are noindexed at the template level, not blocked here,
# so that Google can keep reading the noindex tag and honour it.

Sitemap: https://www.ayan.co.uk/sitemap.xml

Note what is deliberately not in that file: the category pages. They are handled with noindex instead, for the reason in the box at the top — blocking them here would freeze them in the index exactly as they are.

4. app.ayan.co.uk/robots.txt

Currently blocks the sensitive routes and publishes a sitemap that invites indexing of the rest:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /dashboard/*
Disallow: /auth/*
Disallow: /apply*
Disallow: /apply/*

Sitemap: https://app.ayan.co.uk/sitemap.xml

Drop the sitemap line now. Once the noindex header has cleared the existing URLs, replace the whole file with:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Not before — see the note in section 1.

Order of work

  1. Set the redirects for the dead URLs in the table above — immediate recovery, no waiting.
  2. Noindex the category templates and remove them from the sitemap.
  3. Build and publish /car-finance-calculator, linked from homepage and nav.
  4. Wait for it to rank, then noindex the app subdomain and drop its sitemap line.
  5. Update www robots.txt.
  6. Once Search Console shows the app URLs gone, add Disallow: / to app.ayan.co.uk/robots.txt.

Publication dates

No blog post shows a date to the reader, and the date the schema does carry is in a format Google is unlikely to accept.

What is actually there

The Article schema does include datePublished and dateModified, and they are per-post and bound to the CMS — verified across a sample of eight posts, all different and all plausible. That part works.

Two things break it. The value is written as "Sep 16, 2025", and schema.org requires ISO 8601 — "2025-09-16". A date it cannot parse is a date it discards, so the property is almost certainly being ignored. And the schema is assembled in JavaScript and injected at runtime rather than served in the HTML, so it only exists if the page is rendered before it is read.

Separately, nothing is shown on the page itself. The bylines are there and they are good — Written By and Verified By, with roles — but a reader cannot tell whether a post about finance rules is from last month or two years ago.

The fix

1. Output ISO 8601 in the schema: "2025-09-16" not "Sep 16, 2025"
2. Render a visible date next to the byline, from the same CMS field
3. Move the schema into a server-rendered embed instead of building it in JS

All three are one pass on the blog post template. The date field already exists and is populated, so this is a formatting and output change, not a content job.

It matters more here than on most sites: financial guidance is judged on how current it is, by readers deciding whether to trust it and by Google assessing experience and trust on money-related pages. An undated post about finance rules invites the assumption that it is stale.

How the score works

Shared impressions is the number of impressions this post earned on queries the homepage also ranks for, over the last 28 days. It measures competition that is actually happening, rather than pages that merely use similar words. A post can repeat every term on the homepage and still compete for nothing; a post can share no wording at all and still take the same searches.

Bands are drawn on that number: critical at 500 or more, high at 100, low below that. The queries shared with homepage figure beside each row is the count of overlapping queries, and the top-query list shows where each page's impressions actually come from — which is usually the fastest way to see whether a title matches what the page is being found for.

Table-of-contents anchors (…#toc-…) are folded back into their parent page. Search Console reports them as separate URLs, so leaving them split would show pages competing with themselves.

Posts with no recommended action are not listed. They were checked and either compete for nothing or answer a genuinely different question. Posts that were never reviewed are always listed, never hidden — "checked, nothing to do" and "not yet looked at" are different states.

Dead URLs are sorted to the bottom regardless of size. Between them they take 41,329 impressions, more than everything above, but each one is a single redirect rule with an obvious target and no trade-off to weigh. The cannibalisation rows come first because they are the ones that need a decision. The one exception is the halal car finance post, which is both — it is a 404 and it takes homepage searches, so it stays in the top group.

All eight 404s have the same cause. The year was stripped from the slug, which published each post at a new address and left the old one dead with nothing pointing at the replacement. Every replacement is live and serving the same content — verified individually. The sitemap has not caught up: it lists all eight dead URLs and none of the eight live ones, so the replacements are not being submitted to Google at all and the dead ones are. Regenerating the sitemap is part of this fix, not a separate task.

Search Console data covers 13 Jul to 10 Aug 2026. Impressions and positions are impression-weighted averages. Generated 2026-08-13.
